Selectrocide®
What is Selectrocide?
Selectrocide is chlorine dioxide. It's a highly effective biocide. It works for viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew, fungus and slime.
Does Selectrocide have a smell?
Yes, there is faint smell like pool chlorine.
Is that the same thing as pool chlorine?
No. Pool chlorine is a combination of various chemicals including hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions. They are very different in chemical composition and how they work.
How does this product work?
The chlorine dioxide becomes a gas when immersed in water. The gas then penetrates the cell wall attacking the cell from the inside out.
How is it different than quats, bleach or peroxide?
Quats attack extra-cellular proteins thus attacking the cell from the outside in. Bleach is not only a proven carcinogenic but is also sensitive to water pH. Efficacy of bleach is dependant on tap water pH. Peroxide is an oxidizing agent.
Can bacteria and viruses become resistant to Selectrocide, quats and other products?
Because Selectrocide attacks the cell from the inside out, there is not an opportunity for the outer proteins to mutate and become resistant as with other products, including quats.
Is it environmentally sound?
Yes. The product is non-carcinogenic and biodegradable. It's 10X more effective than bleach and more effective than quats.
What does residual time mean and what does it matter?
Residual time is how long the product needs on the surface to dry fully. The matter of concern in the veterinary profession is animals coming in contact with the chemicals when they are still wet. This being licking their paws after walking on a wet floor, licking cages and table surfaces. Most residual times including quats are upwards of 1-2 hours. Selectrocide has a residual time of approximately 60 seconds.
Aside from the other points, how is Selectrocide different?
In the case of an airborne virus or for general proactive disinfection, our product can be fogged. Industrial foggers can be used or a cold air humidifier (follow manufacturers' instructions and note square footage covered).
How long does an area have to be fogged for?
If the apparatus being used covers the appropriate square footage, 20 minutes is sufficient.
Can the animals stay in the room being fogged?
As with any product to be used for fogging, the area is vacated and the product left to saturate the targeted area and let to dry before reintroducing the animals.
How else is Selectrocide different?
Quality control can be performed to ensure the proper concentration is being maintained. There is no guess-work or assumptions (adding more water to get the right shade of pink, green, etc).
Is it hard to test the quality control testing?
No. The test strips are similar to urine dipsticks. Dip the stick and match the colour on the pad to the bottle. This will tell you what concentration the solution is.
How often is quality control done?
Every other week is sufficient. The bottle should last for approximately 1.5-2 years.
Does Selectrocide come as a concentrate?
Selectrocide comes in what resembles a large tea bag and is steeped.
How do I get it to ready to use concentration?
 (see instruction sheet)
What about the kind of water that needs to be used?
We have hard/soft/well water. Tap water is fine to use as pH and mineral content does not affect this product, unlike some other cleaners.
Is it difficult to get the ready to use concentration?
No. The instructions are simple and straight forward.
Does the concentration decrease over time?
Yes, it starts to decrease after a few months.
Does this mean I have to throw it out?
No. Use the test strips to see the ppm (parts per million) level. Use the instruction chart to determine the amount of water to be added depending on the level of ppm's (less water is added when the ppms start to decrease).
Is there any special way to store it?
With the starter kit comes a 30L drum and spigot (like a water jug used for camping). The drum needs to be stored in a cool, dark area (like a closet). Direct sunlight and heat will accelerate the decrease in concentration.
What if we don't have room in a closet or anywhere dark?
Simply wrap it in a black garbage bag to keep the light out.
Do I have to buy the starter kit or can I use what I already have in hospital?
It is highly recommended to use the bottles provided in the starter kit. The 4L bottles have a specific type of cap and all bottles are white, not opaque. To avoid any chance of contamination, use what is supplied in the starter kit, not previously used bottles from hospital use.
How often do I have to replace the bottles?
The 30L drum, 4L jugs, and 1L bottles can all be reused. Unless they get broken or misplaced, they can be reused. Bottles can be purchased outside of the starter kit if replacements or additions are needed.
Our stainless steel is rusting. Is this due to the cleansers we're using?
Yes. They leave what is called a bio-film. The surface of the stainless ends up oxidizing and rust results. With Selectrocide, there is no bio-film.
Where else is Selectrocide used?
Water purification plants have used it for decades. Human hospitals, nursing homes, etc. use it also. It was the product of choice used in the US when the 'superbug' was sweeping through the hospitals a few years back.
